The First Congregational Church of Greenwich invites you to a special choral performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem.
Our annual tradition of presenting a time to gather on Good Friday continues this year on April 18 at 8:00 pm with a performance of the moving masterpiece, Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. Our outstanding Chancel Choir and soloists, Linnea Conley, soprano, and Thomas Woodman, bass, will be accompanied on the organ by our Director of Music, Dr. Craig Scott Symons.
This will be a special performance dedicated to the memory of Timothy Manchester, the son of one of our pastors, Rev. Avery Manchester, who tragically lost his life on May 1, 2013. Fauré’s setting of Requiem is Avery’s favorite and will be a very special way of honoring Tim’s life.
Composed between 1887 and 1890, Faure had no clear reasons for writing this work, other than “…for pleasure, if I may call it that!”
Originally, the score was written for orchestra, chorus, soloists, and organ and was sung in Latin. Later, in 1899-1900, Faure re-scored it for full orchestra and the first performance in the United States took place in 1931.
