Legends Of Rock: TRAFFIC, THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP & STEVIE WINWOOD

Hosted by Music Archivist Bill Shelley

Stevie Winwood was the young genius and front man for the popular The Spencer Davis Group. He wrote and sang their biggest hits and also played organ and guitar. It was during the recording sessions for “Gimme Some Lovin’ ” that he started his own group with session players Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. The name “Traffic” was decided, and in 1967, they released their debut album Dear Mr. Fantasy. This record also included the hits “Paper Sun” and “Hole in My Shoe” (composed by their fourth member, Dave Mason), all three of which will be in the program. Traffic was well received by America and Europe and often toured and played with Jimi Hendrix, taking turns at who topped the bill and playing in one another’s sets. Traffic’s mixture of pop music and jazz influences carried the group through hit albums and singles. Winwood left in 1969 to form Blind Faith with ex-Cream members Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker but returned after one album, less than a year later. To honor the talents of these musicians, the program will include performances from TV, live concerts, and promotional materials of Traffic, The Spencer Davis Group, and Stevie Winwood. Among the songs that will be featured will be “Somebody Help Me,” “John Barleycorn,” “Glad,” “The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys,” “Empty Pages,” “Freedom Rider,” and many more.
