ABOUT THE FILM: Lenny, manages to be both brutally frank and highly romanticized in detailing the short life and career of influential, controversial stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce (Dustin Hoffman). Director Bob Fosse, who's Broadway shows included the original productions of Pippin (1972), for which he won a Tony Award, and Chicago (1975) and films included Cabaret (1972), for which he won an Oscar, and All That Jazz (1979), chose to film Lenny in black-and-white, giving the film the texture of a documentary. The recreated stage performances are "brilliantly acted by Dustin Hoffman," -- 1974 New York Times review and help subvert the biopic convention. A film as verbally graphic as Lenny could not have been made when the real Lenny Bruce was alive, thus adding a romantic perspective on the iconic comic. Could this film get made in today's Hollywood?
