Thumbs Up for Community Garden Project

Board of Selectmen OK use of pinetum land for a community garden in Cos Cob.

Greenwich Community Gardens has moved a step closer to putting shovels into the ground at a community garden the group wants to establish at Montgomery Pinetum in Cos Cob.

The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted to grant a 'municipal improvement' status to the plan which now must be reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Last month, organizers presented their plan to create a gardening space for residents and local groups on a "small portion" of the 39-acre pinetum, located at 129 Bible St., adjacent to the Garden Education Center.

The group is seeking a 10-year lease from the town so that 85 gardening plots can be installed on the property for a three-season garden. The group needed approval of a municipal improvement status from the selectmen before the plan can proceed to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Representative Town Meeting.

"I have heard nothing but support for the proposal," said First Selectman Peter Tesei. "The only comment is 'why no cell tower?' The deed questions whether that is permissible. There were legal impediments. I think this is an appropriate use."

Greenwich Community Gardens has been managing a similar garden operation for four years at the Armstrong Court housing complex on Hamilton Avenue for residents and local groups to grow their own food, flowers and herbs.
