Greenwich Point Is Going To The Dogs ... Literally!

Beginning Dec. 1, canine lovers can bring their dogs for a romp in the Old Greenwich park.

It's almost that time of year when Greenwich Point Park will be going to the dogs — literally.

Starting Saturday, Dec. 1, visitors will be allowed to bring their canine buddies for a walk in the park, more commonly known as Tod's Point.

According to town ordinances, "All dogs must remain on a leash in the hands of an adult throughout the park" and "all dogs must have a valid dog license attached to their collar or harness."

Greenwich Police will be enforcing the local laws including the regulation that "all dogs must be under control below the mean high water mark and must not cause a disturbance to any person or other animal." Violators will be subject to $75-$140 fines.

Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said, “During the first week or so officers have been advised to exercise discretion when issuing a citation relating to any dog violation in the park. The goal is to remind or educate dog owners of the ordinance so that they can comply of their own volition."

Gray added, "Sometimes people lose sight of the fact that not everyone shares the exact same opinion about relatively simple daily matters. For instance what kind of pet you keep and how you keep them is one of those matters. The ordinance works well to balance everyone’s expectation of how best to enjoy the community park together. ”

Dogs are allowed at the 147-acre parked through March 31, 2014.

The town also maintains two fenced areas exclusively for off-leash dogs at the Grass Island Dog Park — one area to accommodate small dogs and another for larger breeds.
