Mothers for Others Assists 75 Needy Greenwich Families

Community partnerships and donations from Greenwich-area businesses and Needs Clearing House helped to make the effort a success.

Mothers for Others (MFO) held their third annual “blowout” distribution for more than 75 needy families last weekend.

The families, identified by local social service agencies, came in a steady stream to “shop” for gently used baby and children’s items as well as new car seats and packages of diapers.  Dozens of dedicated mom volunteers assisted with the month-long spring donation drive, collection, set-up and “personal shopping” for families.  In addition, the University of Michigan Fairfield County Alumni Club joined in to sort and fold the mountain of clothing donations.

“Imagine the disappointment and stress of having two children under the age of 3 and not being able to afford a safe car seat, stroller, diapers or seasonal clothing,” said Karen Giannuzzi, MFO founder.  For two years, MFO has been collecting, sorting, and distributing gently used baby equipment, toys, books and children's clothing to recipient families in the community.

“We are so grateful to Needs Clearing House, founded by Representative Fred Camillo and Joe Kaliko, for raising funds to purchase more than 3000 diapers from Dougie's Stand-by Hot Dog Stand (in Port Chester, NY) and provided at cost by Greenwich Pharmacy,” added Giannuzzi.  “In addition, the Greenwich Police Silver Shield Association continues their campaign to donate new car seats to needy Greenwich families .”

Children also were busy making drawings with Kids Draw Free, a Stamford-based art project. MFO teen volunteers helped little ones create Mother’s Day Cards.

“I was so happy to be part of this special day filled with grateful parents, smiling kids and a community coming together to help the less fortunate,” said Joe Kaliko, co-founder with state Rep. Fred Camillo of Needs Clearing House.
