Rain and Snow, Train Delays Expected in Region

Little or no snow accumulation is expected, though it could start falling as early as 10 a.m. Tuesday. The MTA says commuters are seeing 10-minute delays due to slippery rails.

The MTA on Tuesday said New Haven Line riders can expect 10-minute delays because of the slippery rails.

According to the National Weather Service, unseasonably chilly temperatures are colliding with rain and even snow this morning behind a strong cold front moving along the Eastern seaboard.

In the Old Greenwich, CT area, the weather service is calling for a chance of snow showers between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Little or no accumulation is expected.

According to Metro-North Railroad, crushed leaves combine with rain to leave a “slimy substance” on the rails that prevent trains from speeding up or slowing down as they normally would.

“In severe cases the train will automatically make an emergency stop, because the on-board computer system perceives "slip-sliding" as excessive speed,” the MTA said. “And this slip-sliding and braking can also create flat spots on the train's wheels, forcing us to take much-needed equipment out of service for repairs.” Click here for more information on the slime, and how the MTA combats it.
