From The Lion’s Mouth: Bill Betty At The Audubon

The world according to GML and mountain lion expert Bill Betty: Connecticut is "cougar heaven!"

*The Greenwich Mountain Lion has legions of fans after its initial and subsequent visits to Greenwich nearly a year ago. Greenwich Patch is now hosting a blog by the town's resident wild feline—the Greenwich Mountain Lion, who debunks state environmentalists' assertions that mountain lions don't inhabit the wilds of Connecticut, let alone backcountry Greenwich.

Rumor has it that Bill Betty turns into a lion at midnight ... or, at least I hope he does! He and I should hang out together, touring the rolling back country of Greenwich. We sure could make some trouble on The Avenue, tag-teaming the unreasonably well-heeled at Saks: “Sorry Ma’am, your thigh-high Uggs made us think you were undressed mutton chops ... Bentley on out of here or join us for dinner!”

On Friday, Bill took his human form to speak at the (near my favorite hanging spots) and told a story familiar to me—mountain lions are here, get over it. Most mountain lions are genetically indistinguishable, so don’t assume all of them in the Northeast are . Leave a spare key under the mat for your favorite local lion to help herself to your leftover mignon  (OK, I made up the last part—a lion’s got to try, doesn’t she?)

Bill is the best friend to the Eastern Mountain Lion that I know. His traveling message is that mountain lions are here in Connecticut, a/k/a “Cougar Heaven,” with its rolling hills and copious deer sashimi. He has seen 14 of us up close (lucky guy!), and believes the accounts of the Connecticut (Massachusetts and Rhode Island) residents who have spotted us in places where we are “officially extinct.” If you ask me, what’s extinct are the brains of the CT DEP spokespeople, but apparently they don’t have the funding to watch out for our endangered tails. WHATEVER!

Come back soon, Bill. We need to keep spreading the gospel of the Eastern Mountain Lion. Amen (and RAWWWWWRRRRRR!)
