Cub Scout “Turkey Event” Is On Target

150 Cub Scouts tested their aim and skills during the Greenwich Scouting Annual Turkey Target event at Seton Scout Reservation.  After hearing a safety talk and lesson, participating boys enjoyed time at both the archery and BB ranges at Camp Seton.  An Ultimate Frisbee course was an event highlight this year, especially as each Cub Scout took home a custom mini frisbee.  In addition to target stations, the Heritages Belt Loop was offered for boys, with the help of their adult companions, to create family trees and document their family’s history, traditions and culture.

The Turkey Target event combines fun activities that teach Cub Scouts about shooting sports in a safe environment.  It’s a chance for these 1st through 5th grade boys to try something new, do their best, and earn recognition all at the same time.  While no turkeys are harmed or even present at the event, the fall weather and timing before Thanksgiving are where the event receives it name!  All of the stations are run by trained volunteers and Cub Scouts have the opportunity to earn specific belt loops for most of the activities.  There are over 50 different belt loops that Cub Scouts can earn, which ultimately helps fulfill the aims of Scouting—building character, developing citizenship, and encouraging mental and physical fitness.

For over 100 years Greenwich Scouting has delivered quality programs to nearly 2,500 local youth annually.  Scouting youth participate in fun programs, such as the Turkey Target event, that build character, foster volunteerism and explore the outdoors, all helping to prepare them for life.  Through continued partnerships and the efforts of more than 300 dedicated volunteers, Greenwich Scouting looks forward to providing greater opportunities to boys and girls, through Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venturing Crews, Explorer Posts and Learning For Life Groups for the next 100 years!  For more information about local Scouting visit www.GreenwichScouting.org.
