Record Breaking 23 Eagle Scouts for 2013 Class

Greenwich Scouting is celebrating twenty three new Eagles Scouts at the thirty-seventh Annual Eagle Recognition Dinner and “Gathering of Eagles” on Monday, June 10th at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.  In addition to recognizing the 2013 Class of Eagle Scouts, the event will also honor Lieutenant Commander Charles “Chuck” Standard who will be awarded the fifth Malcolm Pray “Friend of Eagles” Award.  Past recipients of this award include Malcolm Pray, First Selectman Peter Tesei, Jack Moffly and State Senator Scott Frantz.  Local Eagle Scouts of all ages are invited to attend the “Gathering of Eagles” and reunite to celebrate the accomplishments of the newest Greenwich Eagle Scouts.

Charles Standard, known to everyone in Greenwich as “Chuck” is a World War II veteran dive-bomber pilot, who was awarded the Navy Cross, the highest award given by the U.S. Navy.  A graduate of Purdue University, he received permission from the University to take Naval flight training during his senior year.  It was two years later as a dive-bomber pilot attached to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, he scored a direct hit on a Japanese heavy cruiser.  For this he was awarded the Naval Cross medal acknowledging his extreme bravery.  After the war Standard enjoyed a successful career in advertising.  He is a major force behind the Old Greenwich Memorial Day Parade.  In his nineties, Chuck is a busy volunteer with Community Answers, the Retired Men’s Association and the Race Committee at the Riverside Yacht Club.  His positive attitude with a ready smile makes him a Greenwich Hero and a terrific role model to the 2013 Greenwich Eagle Scout Class.

The twenty three new Greenwich Eagle Scouts are part of nearly 800 Eagle Scouts who have earned this notable rank through Greenwich Scouting over the last 100 years.  To date there are over two-million Eagle Scouts nationwide who make up our current and future leaders.  Greenwich Scouting continues to create leaders through quality programs for 2,500 local youth annually.  Scouting youth participate in fun programs that build character, foster volunteerism and explore the outdoors, all helping to prepare them for life.  Through continued partnerships and the efforts of more than 300 dedicated volunteers, Greenwich Scouting looks forward to providing greater opportunities to boys and girls, through Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venturing Crews, Explorer Posts and Learning For Life Groups for the next 100 years!
