Scouting Food Drive Stocks Neighbor to Neighbor’s Food Pantry

Thanks to the leadership of State Rep. Fred Camillo, the hard work of Greenwich Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and adult volunteers and the generosity of our community, Neighbor to Neighbor’s food pantry received over 210 crates of food this past weekend!

This year’s annual “Scouting for Food” drive was an overwhelming success, doubling the crates of food brought in last year.  Much of the donated food came from local grocery stores that hosted Scouts collecting at their locations- in particular Greenwich and Glenville Stop & Shops, Riverside A&P Fresh and Kings in Old Greenwich.

“We are so grateful for all the work the Scouts do to keep our food pantry shelves stocked,” said Nancy Coughlin, Executive Director of Neighbor to Neighbor.  “We provide food every week to over 1,000 Greenwich residents, and we could not meet this very real community need without their help."

The success of the event would not have been possible without the direction and help of Fred Camillo as well the collection locations provided by the Glenville Vol. Fire Company, Cos Cob Vol. Fire Co., Sound Beach Vol. Fire Dept. and Christ Church!

Since its inception in 1912, Greenwich Scouting goals have remained the same, emphasizing youth adventure, leadership, learning, outdoor exploration, and perhaps most importantly, service.  Scouts are encouraged to "Do a Good Turn Daily" and the “Scouting for Food” drive has been the council’s largest annual good turn for nearly 30 years.

Greenwich Scouting was excited to again partner with Neighbor to Neighbor to help fill the increasing need for food for families in the area, especially during non-holiday times like March.  Neighbor to Neighbor provides nutritious meals monthly for over 650 local families through their “Client Choice” food pantry where clients actually have the opportunity to do their own shopping at the food pantry.  47% of the food provided by Neighbor to Neighbor feeds children.
