Catherine L. Powers, 85; Riverside Resident, Local Business Owner

Catherine Loughran Powers, a longtime resident of Riverside, died May 9 at Edgehill in Stamford. She was 85.

Born Sept. 29, 1928 in the Bronx, NY to the late Ellen and Peter Loughran, Cathy loved bowling, cats, decorating and the underdog. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald B. Powers, mother of four and grandmother of nine.

Mrs. Powers graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA and studied interior design at Fairfield University. She worked at Liberty Mutual in Springfield, MA before marrying and moving to Burlington, VT and Bristol, CT before settling in Riverside.

Mrs. Powers was a parishioner at St. Catherine of Siena Church; past president of the Pro Christo service organization; co-founder of the Two Cathys, a maker of creative crafts; and a former member of Innis Arden Golf Club. Cathy was known for her quiet grace, her subtle sense of humor and her diligence in ensuring her children and grandchildren were dressed in fashionable, color-coordinated outfits.

She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Donald B Powers and is survived by two daughters: Chris Powers of Cambridge, MA; Ellen Hochberger and her husband, Stuart, of Summit, NJ; two sons: Donald Powers Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Ridgefield; and Jack Powers and his wife, Anne, of Fairfield as well as nine grandchildren: Matt, Robby and Anna Powers; Zak, Erin and Will Powers; and Jake, Brian and Tess Hochberger.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, May 14, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Chapel in Riverside followed by Burial in Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.
