Charles C. Chiappetta, 81; Professional Baseball Player, Golfer; Native Greenwichite

Charles C. Chiappetta, of Greenwich, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014. He was 81.

He was born on July 17, 1932 in Greenwich, the son of Palmer Chiappetta and Julia Mangone Chiappetta, and raised in Cos Cob where he had many fond memories growing up. 

He started his baseball career at the age of 12 playing for the Cos Cob School Baseball Team, winning the Town Championship of Grammar Schools in 1944. He played with the Cos Cob Aces, winning Town Tournaments in 1945 & 1946, played basketball with the Atomics and won the Town Wide Basketball Tournament in 1946. He attended Greenwich High School, was the Captain of his Baseball Team his senior year, lettered three years in baseball, basketball and football and was awarded a four-year scholarship to Arnold College in Milford.

After college he played professional baseball in the Gulf Coast League in Lake Charles LA, an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs and also played in the Evangeline Leagues in Thibodeaux, LA & Natchez, MS. After he left professional baseball he continued to play fast pitch softball in Greenwich with St. Lawrence, Belmont, Two Door & the Young Democrat Teams. He also played in the four town leagues and the Stamford Twilight League. He won the first Town Wide Bowling Tournament in 1963 in the Scratch Division. Soon after, he attended the PGA School in Florida and graduated in 1968. He worked as an assistant golf pro at Stanwich Club, Greenwich, and Dellwood Country Club, New City NY. He won the Pro-Member at Innis Arden in 1968, as the Low Pro, shooting 69. He ran for Town Selectman in 1970 and was Democrat District Leader for 5 years.

He was honored by the Greenwich Old Timers Association, was an avid golfer, winning many local tournaments.

Charles was a loving husband and cherished his time with his wife of 61 years, Olimpia. He so enjoyed her cooking and their breakfasts with special friends. He was a man of strong convictions, family and friends meant everything to him and he never tired of helping others. His grandchildren were the joy of his life and he kept up with all of their activities and sports and loved spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife Olimpia Urso Chiappetta and three children, Julia Chiappetta of Greenwich, Charlene Montesarchio and her husband Vincent of Plantation FL, Palmer Chiappetta and his wife Kimberly of Newtown; grandchildren: Briana Montesarchio Davell and her husband William, Victoria Montesarchio, Jackson Chiappetta, Jonathan Chiappetta and great-grandchild James Ryan Davell.

Viewing will be Friday, May 30, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the  Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m. at St Catherine of Siena Church, Riverside.
