Edward T. Krumeich Sr., D.P.M., passed from this world peacefully of natural causes surrounded by his family on Jan. 12, 2013. Dr. Krumeich was a doctor of podiatric medicine.
Dr. Krumeich was born Nov.13, 1923 in the Bronx, NY, the son of Edward J. Krumeich and Irene Brophy.
He graduated from the prestigious Manhattan public school, Stuyvesant High School, in 1941. His freshman year at New York University was interrupted by the war when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked. From 1942-1945 Lieutenant Krumeich served in the Navy Air Corps as navigator of a PBY Catalina deployed overseas in anti-submarine warfare.
After the war he graduated from Long Island University as a doctor of podiatric medicine and had a practice in the Wall Street area. In 1949 Dr. Krumeich married Marie C. Lauricella of Greenwich. In 1950 Dr. Krumeich set up his podiatry practice on Milbank Avenue where he practiced for 40 years until his retirement in 1989. Dr. Krumeich treated patients at area hospitals and nursing homes, including The Nathaniel Witherell and the Cerebral Palsy Association, which bestowed an award on Dr. Krumeich in recognition of his development of a new and improved leg brace.
Dr. Krumeich was active in many civic organizations. He was Chairman of the Health Committee of the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting when fluoridation of the town’s water supply was approved. He belonged to The Rotary Club, the Wild Geese, the Retired Men’s Association and the Navy League.
An avid sailor he sailed out of Traverse Island of the New York Athletic Club before his marriage. Later he became Commodore of the Old Greenwich Yacht Club, which continues to award sailors the Krumeich Cup, and served for many years in the Club’s iceberg patrol. Dr. Krumeich also was a long-standing member of the Greenwich Boat and Yacht Club. He developed an interest in archeology and joined the Gungywump Society which awarded him an honor for documenting evidence of pre-Columbian European exploration of America.
Dr. Krumeich is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marie C. Krumeich (nee Lauricella), his sons Edward T. Krumeich II of Greenwich, Dr. Jonathan T. Krumeich of Avon, Connecticut, and Christopher R. Krumeich of Greenwich; his grandchildren Jonathan, Sarah, Fredrick, Katherine and Dana Krumeich, all of Greenwich, and his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Kneisel Krumeich. He is also survived by his sister, the Honorable Irene Duffy of Pelham, NY, formerly Judge of the New York Supreme Court. His brother Thaddeus Krumeich, a noted artist known as “Uncle Tad”, predeceased him.
A wake for Dr. Krumeich will be held at Fred D Knapp & Son Funeral Home,
267 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at St. Mary Church, 178 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich.
