Gaetana Liberati Ricci, 103; Teacher, Volunteer, Mother of Greenwich Residents

Mrs. Ricci's funeral will be held Friday, Jan. 3.


Gaetana Liberati Ricci, a former teacher in Rye and Port Chester, NY, passed away Dec. 30, with her children at her side. She was 103.

Born in San Donato, Italy in 1910, she emigrated through Ellis Island with her parents and settled in Port Chester, NY. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a Bachelor of Arts degree and was a teacher of English, Latin and social studies in both the Port Chester and Rye school systems.

Mrs. Ricci was a 25-year active volunteer at the former United Hospital, a dedicated volunteer for the Rye Association for the Handicapped, and a Girl Scout troop leader. She was an avid amateur artist with many of her paintings decorating the homes of family and friends, and an exceptional seamstress.

She was a resident of the Edgehill Community in Stamford, for the past 14 years. She previously resided in Rye, NY, where she raised her family.

She is survived by her daughters Susan Ricci and Elaine Leegstra (Ruurd) of Greenwich, and a sister, Rita Kunz, of Columbus, OH.

Mrs. Ricci was the widow of Nunzio Ricci.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3 at the chapel of St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Ave., Riverside. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, 461 Glenbrook Rd., Stamford, CT, 06906 or a charity of choice.

The Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich, is in charge of arrangements.
