Greenwich Obituary: James Decaro, 90, Retired Town Employee


James Timothy Decaro, a lifelong Greenwich resident and a retired Greenwich town employee, died April 18, at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home. He was 90.

Mr. Decaro was born in Riverside, on Dec. 16, 1922, the son of the late Lorenza Castiglione Decaro (Deara) and James T. Decaro.

He was educated in the Greenwich Public School system, and as a youth loved to hunt and fish all around North Mianus. He was first employed at the Conde Nast publishing company. Later he then worked for the Town of Greenwich Sewer Division as a maintenance mechanic. He retired from the town in 1985.

“Big Jim” as he was affectionately known to his friends, was a founding member of the Mianus River Boat and Yacht Club and a veteran member of the Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Department. He loved boating on Long Island Sound and was an avid N.Y Mets fan.

He is survived by his sisters, Florence Decaro of Riverside, Nicolett Craig and her husband Dusty, of Cos Cob, and Marie Burriesci of Stamford; his nieces Barbara Cerulli of Stamford and Mary Swilinski of Guilford, and nephews Chuck Burriesci, and Joe Decaro of Stratford, and by grand-nieces and nephews.

Mr. Decaro was predeceased by his brothers Ralph Decaro and Joseph Decaro. 

The family would like to thank his close friends Zeb, Inghy, Gary, Pachy, Popeye, Bunny and Lou, for their continued friendship and support over the years and also the staff of the Nathaniel Witherell for their compassionate Care during the last 4 years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 in the Chapel at Nathaniel Witherell, 70 Parsonage Rd. Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Decaro's memory may be made to the Mary Bruce Patient Trust Fund Recreation, 70 Parsonage Rd. Greenwich, CT 08630.
