Joan Murphy, 85; Volunteer Who Managed Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop


Joan S. Murphy, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2013 at Greenwich Hospital. She was 85.

Born in New York City on Nov. 15, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Nora Sternecker.

Mrs. Murphy was a long-time Greenwich resident, who enjoyed many years managing the Greenwich Hospital Gift Shop and later volunteering at the Old Greenwich Rummage Room that benefits many local organizations. She was an avid bridge player and took great pleasure in her many bridge groups. She was also a long time member of the Innis Arden Golf Club and an active member of the Women's Club of Greenwich supporting their many events.
 
She is survived by her sister Claire Sternecker; her children, Robert Long, Patricia Long Harris, Joanne Farrell and John Long; six grandchildren, Brian Harris, Laura Harris, Patrick Farrell, Ryan Farrell, Timothy Farrell, Brooke Farrell, and her stepchildren Jerry Murphy, Jane Murphy, Ken Murphy, Nancy Murphy and Dan Murphy. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. John Murphy.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at St. Mary's Church, 178 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, with burial to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Women's Club of Greenwich.
