John 'Rudy' Ridberg

A memorial service will be held Thursday, in Leesburg, Fla.

Former Greenwich resident John "Rudy" Ridberg, father of , has died.

As per an obituary in the Greenwich Time, Ridberg was born in New York, NY in 1916. He moved to Greenwich in 1923 with his parents, John Patrik and Rauha Ridberg, and sister, Miriam. He graduated from and was employed by the Connecticut Light and Power Company until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April 1942.

Mr. Ridberg served with the Fourth Marine Division as a radio/telephone operator in the South Pacific during World War II, receiving a medical discharge in 1945, according to the obituary. He played baseball and basketball in school and became a semi-pro baseball player after his discharge.

Mr. Ridberg worked as an electrician for many years and retired in 1981 as owner of JR Electrical Service.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, in Leesburg, Fla. A second memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Comly Avenue, Rye Brook, NY. Mr. Ridberg’s cremated remains will be interred in Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford, according to the obituary.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church or to a local Hospice.
