Obituary: Daniel A. Sileo, WWII Vet, Arnold Bakers Retiree

Calling hours are scheduled for Sunday, June 16, with the funeral to be held June 17.


Daniel Andrew Sileo, passed away peacefully at Greenwich Hospital on June 11, surrounded by his loving family and long-time friend, Irene Scheck. He was 94.

A Greenwich resident for 72 years, he was born in Stamford on Feb. 10, 1919, to the late Andrew and Maria Paula Sileo.

He served during World War II in the US Navy. He made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the destroyer escort the USS Donnell before the ship was torpedoed. He and about one-half of the surviving crew were able to save the ship from sinking and it was towed to a port in Scotland. He then served in the Pacific prior to the end of the war. When he returned home he was hired by Arnold Bakers (then located in Port Chester) and worked there for more than 30 years, first in production and later as manager of purchasing prior to his retirement.

He was an active member of the Glenville Seniors and the Western Greenwich AARP enjoying many trips with both groups.

He is survived by his daughter Jo Ann McDermott and her husband Kevin of Tarrytown, NY, his grandchildren, Louis Dellipoali and wife Jane of Fairfield, Christy Cairo and husband Danny of Oxford, Daniel Dellipoali and wife Kathy of Round Rock, TX and Stacy Rameor of Greenwich. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Kyle, Holly, Nikki, Caleigh, Jaimee, Jacob, Charlie, Paige and “Lucky”.

He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years in 1986, Constance Tripodi Sileo and by his daughter and son-in-law Pauline and Charles “Skip” Rameor. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Angelina Lovito and Lucy Caminiti, and brothers James and Salvatore. 

The family would like to thank the entire team at Greenwich Hospital who provided him with excellent care and also the King Street Home for their care during his final illness. A loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend to many he will be sorely missed.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich, from 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday June 16.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 17, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich. Internment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, North Street, Greenwich.
