Sylvia Roberts, 87; Old Greenwich Resident, Accounting Employee


Sylvia Roberts, passed away peacefully at her home in Old Greenwich on Aug. 17, 2013. She was 87.

She was born April 21, 1926, and raised in the UK.

Sylvia moved to Canada with her husband and son in the late 1950s. Their daughter was born in Canada, and the family then moved to the United States in the early 1960s. They lived in Shaker Heights, OH, and Silver Spring, MD, before moving to Wilton, CT, in the mid-'60s.

In 1979, Sylvia moved to Westport, and lived there until 1995, when she moved to be closer to her daughter and family. Over the next few years, they lived near each other or together in West Hartford, CT, Chapel Hill, NC, Seattle, WA, and Old Greenwich. During her career, Sylvia worked in accounting for Brooks Community Newspapers, Perolin, Conoco, General DataComm, and Sears, and attended Sacred Heart University and Fairfield University. 

She loved long walks at the beach, theater, music, museums, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean; granddaughter, Sarah, and son-in-law, David. She is also survived by family in the United Kingdom, including her brother, Jim, and sister-in-law, Olga, brothers- and sisters-in-law Arthur, Morfydd, David, Glenys, Myfanwy, and John, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Owen, in 1974, and her son, John, in 1982.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich, 108 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to The Connecticut Hospice, Inc., 1 Park St., Norwalk, CT 06851.
