5 Busted in Memorial Day Holiday DWI Enforcement

There 17 accidents in Greenwich over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.


The Memorial Day weekend driving while intoxicated enforcement effort netted Greenwich Police more than double the arrests of drivers than in previous years.

According to police, a total of five drivers were arrested over the holiday weekend during a concentrated effort to crackdown on drivers operating under the influence. A total of 139 drivers were stopped by police at various checkpoints throughout town. The arrests were made from Delavan Avenue in Byram to Sylvan Lane in Old Greenwich, according to police records.

In 2013, police made two DWI arrests and one in 2012.

This holiday weekend, police responded to 17 motor vehicle accidents, one of which involved injuries. In each of the previous two years, police investigated 25 crashes.

In 2012, there was a total of 114 drivers stopped and 80 in 2013.

The drunk driving enforcement effort was part of a weeklong program with officers checking drivers for seatbelt and cell phone violations. A total of 109 drivers were cited in that two-state effort that also involved agencies from New York working checkpoints at various Connecticut-New York border locations.
