After Striking Curb Twice, 70-Year-Old Faces DWI Charge

Greenwich Police arrested the elderly driver in Old Greenwich.


An elderly driver who was observed by Greenwich Police striking curbs twice and driving on the wrong side of the road in Old Greenwich was arrested on a driving while intoxicated charge.

According to a Greenwich Police report, the incident began just after 8 p.m. Oct. 26 on Laddins Rock Road when the southbound driver struck the curb and began driving on the wrong side of the road. As police tried to stop the woman, she reportedly turned onto Harding Road and struck the curb there, before coming to an abrupt stop, according to the report.

The driver, identified as Edilma M. Smith, 70, of Madison Avenue, Bridgeport, had an odor of alcohol on her breath and failed field sobriety tests, according to the report.

Smith was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to drive right and unsafe lane movement. She posted a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear Nov. 7 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
