Another Fake $100 Bill, Another Arrest in Greenwich

Greenwich Police have arrested a second suspect in less than a week on charges they used a fake $100 bill to make a purchase at the Walgreens pharmacy in the Riverside section of town.

Shortly before 5 p.m. March 21, employees of Walgreens, 1333 E. Putnam Ave., called police to report a customer was trying to use a phony $100 bill to buy a pack of cigarettes, according to police. When the customer realized the fake bill was detected by a store clerk, the man left the store, according to police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray.

The suspect, identified as Alberto Nieves, 39, of Queens, NY, was arrested in the store parking lot. Nieves was charged with first-degree forgery and criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny. His bond was set at $25,000 and was scheduled to appear March 28 in state Superior Court in Stamford.

Nieves' arrest was the second in a week involving fraudelent $100 bills being passed at the Walgreens. On March 14, a Jackson Heights, NY woman was arrested after she reportedly used a phony $100 bill to buy about $10 in merchandise. Police said they seized a total of four fake bills from that suspect.

Gray said that both cases have been turned over to the U.S. Secret Service for further investigation.
