The Greenwich Fire Department spent nearly 6 1/2 hours at the Middle School of the Brunswick School on King Street Tuesday because a minor chimney fire.

According to Deputy Fire Marshal Sean McDonald, firefighters were called to the school at 7:40 a.m. and found the smouldering fire contained the chimney. He said firefighters were hampered by the snow and ice close to the building and had to wait for front-end loaders to remove the mounds so they could move a ladder truck to the building.

"It was a non-event but time-consuming. It was just smouldering and wasn't going anywhere," McDonald said. Crews left the scene at 2:22 p.m.

A school spokeswoman said there wasn't any fire and the issue was a boiler. Students were moved to a gymnasium and after "everything checked out fine, the boys safely back to the Middle School and classes resumed."
