Burglars Strike 4 Greenwich Homes

The residents of four Greenwich residences weren't home for the holidays discovered when they returned that someone had entered the homes and stole cash, jewelry and electronics.

According to Greenwich Police Lt. Kraig Gray, "There are crews of professional burglars in town all the time. Residents need to take precautions." He said, the four burglaries occurred between Dec. 22 and 26 "all around town."

The first burglary was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. Dec. 22 by residents of a Silo Circle home. Thieves forced their way into the midcountry home via the second floor and took money and jewelry.

Just after 12 a.m. Christmas Day, residents of a Stag Lane — in the backcountry — returned home to find cash, jewelry and electronic devices were stolen. There wasn't any sign of forced entry, Gray said.

The third burglary occurred at a Binney Lane home in Old Greenwich. Residents reported the theft shortly after 9:30 a.m. Dec. 26. Gray said burglars forced their way into the home via the second-floor.

Residents of a Halstead Avenue home — in the western end of town — returned their residence to find a first floor door was forced open. The theft of cash and jewelry was reported about 1 p.m., Dec. 26

Gray said residents need to take precautions whether they're away for the day or for an extended period. "Don't broadcast you're away. Know your neighbors and if you're fortunate to have an alarm system, set it. Use lights with timers or motion sensors. Generally, burglars do not want any complications," Gray said.

At the beginning of the holiday season, Police Chief James Heavey also urged residents to stop newspaper and mail deliveries. He also said residents can request their residence be placed on the 'dark house list,' the department maintains.
