Car-Truck Crash Injured 84-year-old Town Woman

Greenwich Police are continuing their investigation into what caused an 84-year-old Greenwich woman to veer into the path of an oncoming 10-wheel dump truck Monday afternoon, causing a crash that left her critically injured.

According to police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray, "It appears she was southbound on North Street and her vehicle drifted across the double yellow lines. The driver of the 10-wheel dump truck saw her drifting and he immediately began to slow down and pull over onto the soft shoulder of the road in front of 440 North St., near the entrance to St. Mary's Cemetery and .

"He was at a near complete stop on the shoulder as far as he could go - he couldn't move over any further because of a stone wall - and the car hit the truck," Gray said.

The woman, who Gray said will not be identified at the request of her family, was driving a 1997 Lexus ES300, four-door sedan. There weren't any skid marks and the Greenwich Police Traffic Section is investigating which shut down North Street - a major north-south artery in town - for four hours. Gray said there were several witnesses to the crash, who were following each of the vehicles.

The impact of the crash with the 1985 International dump truck which was carrying a load of top soil, left the mangled car unrecognizable.

The female victim suffered "numerous and severe injuries" which Gray declined to specify. "She's still in critical condition and she has a long road to recovery ahead," Gray said. She was brought to  Greenwich Hospital, stabilized, and then transported by ambulance to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY on Monday night, according to Gray.

Gray added, "(she) was wearing her seatbelt and the police department feels strongly that was a contributing factor to her surviving this serious crash."

No charges have been filed. "No enforcement has been taken yet. The investigation is continuing," Gray said. The truck driver and the owner have not been identified.

Gray also said that police will not release further information until their investigation is completed.
