Click It or Ticket Campaign Begins in Greenwich

And that campaign will continue through the Memorial Day holiday when there also will be sobriety checkpoints throughout Greenwich.

If you're wondering why traffic on the Greenwich-Port Chester and Rye Brook borders was slower than normal Monday night — the annual kickoff for the national Click It or Ticket seatbelt safety campaign.

And you can expect area police, especially Greenwich Police to continue their efforts during the next several days, through the Memorial Day weekend.

Seven law enforcement agencies — Greenwich, Stamford, Port Chester and Rye Brook Police, Westchester County Sheriff, and the Connecticut and New York State Police — were on hand Monday night for the kickoff of the national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization. Officers set up check points along the Connecticut - New York border on Route 1 (West Putnam Avenue), Mill Street and King Street at the Merritt Parkway to enforce the seatbelt laws of the two states.

Greenwich Police Chief James Heavey said, “The interagency cooperation and partnership in high visibility traffic safety programs like this, is a clear message to the public that we place public safety as our first priority.”

During the Memorial Day weekend there will also will be several sobriety checkpoints in town, in conjunction with the seatbelt checks, beginning Thursday, May 22 through Memorial Day, May 26.  On Friday, May 23, checkpoints will be set up on Railroad Avenue, Delavan Avenue, Greenwich Avenue, Arch Street and Route 1.
