Cops Say Distracted Driving Lead to Rollover [Video]

Information supplied by Greenwich Police and does not indicate guilt or convictions.

A motorist apparently became distracted while driving along the straightaway on Caroline Place Wednesday afternoon, striking a boulder, causing the 2004 Kia Optima to rollover.

The road, a main west-to-east shortcut along the Byram River, was closed to traffic for more than an hour after the 3:05 p.m. crash. Greenwich Police Officer D. Colbee said at the scene, "the driver hit the rock, flipped it over and got cut on the glass when he crawled back into the car to retrieve his belongings and cell phone."

The unidentified driver suffered minor cuts and did not require medical treatment.

Colbee said the driver would be cited for distracted driving, driving without a license and traveling too fast. Colbee estimated "he was going a minimum of 36 mph" in the 25 mph zone. "He did a 180 and landed on the hood (of the car)," he added.

The driver's father, also unidentified, recently purchased the car and was ticketed for having an unregistered motor vehicle and an uninsured vehicle and misuse of plates because the marker plates on the car belonged to another vehicle, according to Colbee.

Police summoned a Greenwich Public Works Department bucket loader crew to move the boulder that was nearly 4-feet long and 2-feet tall back into place. That stretch of the road is lined with the boulders atop the embankment leading down to the Byram River.
