GPD: 'Weapons Turn-In Day a Success'

Greenwich Police say the weapons turn-in program over the weekend was a success.

Residents turned in a total of 20 weapons on June 22 in return for gift cards donated by Putnam Shell and Bennett Jewelers of Old Greenwich, according to Det. Anthony Fiscella.

"We consider extremely, extremely successful," Fiscella said. There were nine long guns, seven pistols, three BB rifles and one pellet pistol turned in.

"Our expectations were that if we got one gun out the wrong hands, out of the hands of a child, then it would be considered successful," Fiscella said.

In addition to the weapons, there about a dozen boxes of ammunition and a few hundred rounds of ammunition in a bag, Fiscella said.

Fiscella said, "we consider both of these turn-in programs successful." The department held its first turn-in program in February. The department is looking at having another in the fall.
