Greenwich Jewelry Store Employees Thwart Fraud Attempt

Alert employees of a downtown Greenwich jeweler thwarted a man's attempt to use a reportedly stolen credit card to buy merchandise this week.

According to a Greenwich Police report, employees of Lux, Bond & Green, 169 Greenwich Ave., recognized the suspect as a man whose picture had been distributed to them "as someone who attempted to make fraudulent purchases in the area." The report did not detail where those attempts had been made.

Officers arrested the man after he was reportedly found to have a platinum American Express card that wasn't issued to him, along with a fraudulent driver's license, about 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

The suspect was identified through fingerprints as Thomas J. Wilson, 62, of Gambrills, MD, according to the report. Wilson was charged with second-degree larceny, criminal attempt at second-degree larceny, second-degree identity theft, interfering with an officer and five counts of second-degree forgery.

According to the police report, Wilson has an "extensive" criminal history "with outstanding warrants in New York that included requests to hold Mr. Wilson for arrest and transfer to their jurisdiction."

Wilson was unable to post $50,000 bond on the Greenwich charges and is scheduled to appear Nov. 20 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
