After evading Greenwich police by residing in South Carolina for four years, a town man accused of stealing jewelry and staging a burglary crime scene is in custody.

James C. Martin, 48, of 192 Putnam Park, was arrested by warrant at 6 p.m. Thursday and charged with third-degree larceny, a felony, and criminal mischief.

On May 4, 2007, Martin allegedly stole jewelry from a neighbor of his mother’s in Putnam Park—a neighbor to whose home he had some access.

“It was reported to us as a burglary with a larceny,” said Lt. Kraig Gray, public information officer with the Greenwich Police Department. “Investigators at the time became suspicious that it was something different … He fled immediately once he realized police were on to him.”

Greenwich police had obtained a non-extraditable warrant, meaning they were not able to travel to South Carolina to serve it, Gray said.
