Greenwich PD Promotes 3 Veteran Officers

Lt. Robert Berry, Sgt. David Nemecek and Officer William Larkin were promoted in a ceremony at Greenwich Police headquarters.



Three veteran Greenwich Police officers who have a total of more than 60 years experience between them were promoted Wednesday.

Lt. Robert Berry, who joined the force in 1997, was promoted to captain. Sgt. David Nemecek, who was hired in 1990, was promoted to lieutenant, and Officer William Larkin, who's been on the force since 1990, was promoted to sergeant.

Before administering the promotional oaths before more than 100 fellow officers and relatives at police headquarters, First Selectman Peter Tesei, who's also the town's police commissioner, said, "We're here to celebrate and share in the successes of Robert, David and Bill. This is a celebration of their achievements and recognition of their advancement in the ranks of the Greenwich Police Department."

Berry holds a bachelor's degree from Fordham University and master's in homeland security from the American Military University. He has served two tours of duty in Kuwait and Iraq with as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and as awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Action badge. Until his promotion he served as the lieutenant in charge of the police department's professional standards.

Nemecek, who has served as the department's marine section's sergeant, holds a bachelor's degree from Iona College and a law degree from Quinnipiac College. He has several certifications related to his marine section service including advanced scuba diver, rescue diver, underwater search and recovery, and marine boat operator. He also has received several department commendations.

Larkin, who earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Iona College, is a certified police bicycle officer, an EMT, a basic life support CPR instructor. He has received several awards including the Chief's Award for Meritorious Duty. Off-duty, he is a Greenwich football, basketball and baseball coach, and a marathoner with the New York Police and Boston Police Runners clubs.

The promotions are the result of the retirement in December of Capt. Timothy Berry.
