Greenwich PD: Suspect in Bank Robberies 'Seems Similar'

Greenwich Police say it appears the suspect in a string of bank robberies in Greenwich and Fairfield "seem similar."

Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said, "Surveillance footage seems like it is a similar suspect," and he stopped short of saying investigators are looking for the same short Hispanic man with a penchant for wearing hats who robbed two banks in Greenwich and two in Fairfield in the last two weeks.

On Monday, Greenwich police met with investigators from the Fairfield Police Department and the FBI who were seen leaving police headquarters.

"We're networking ... talking with other agencies," Gray said of the Sept. 16 meeting.

Meanwhile, police have beefed up patrols around local banks.

The string of heists began on Aug. 28 at People's United Bank at 410 Greenwich Ave.just across the street from the Greenwich Train Station. The robbery prompted the shutdown of Metro-North Railroad at the height of rush hour as police hunted for the suspect who implied he had a gun and reportedly fled towards the station.

On Sept. 5, a similar suspect robbed the Chase Bank at 137 W. Putnam Ave.

On Sept. 13, a man first robbed Bank of America, 1320 Kings Highway Cutoff, in Fairfield at 3:44 p.m. and then fled on foot towards the shopping center housing Office Max, CVS and Marshall’s, according to Fairfield Police.

The man then reportedly changed his shirt and hat before driving in an unknown vehicle to commit a second robbery at Chase Bank, 340 Grasmere Avenue, at 4:04 p.m. He then fled behind the building near the Kings Highway entrance to Whole Foods.
