Greenwich Bank Robbery Suspect Hits New Jersey

The suspect in the Aug. 28 Greenwich People's United Bank robbery is suspected in an Aug. 20 robbery at Wells Fargo Bank in Linden, NJ. Police believe the suspect fled Greenwich in a small silver sedan with NY plate beginning with: "ANX."

Greenwich Police have two leads in the Aug. 28 People's Bank robbery in Greenwich, they announced at a press conference Thursday.

The Greenwich suspect is also believed to have been involved in a robbery at a Wells Fargo bank in Linden at about 2:30 p.m., Lt. Kraig Gray announced. The information was a result of networking efforts with police in the tri-state area, he said.

Police believe that just after the Greenwich robbery the suspect got into a small silver sedan in the area of the Greenwich train station, Gray said. They believe the car was a New York registered vehicle. They have partial plate of "ANX" or similar combination of those letters.

Gray indicated that the Greenwich information came from an off-duty Greenwich Police officer.

"The entire outfit sparked his interest," Gray said. "At the time, he didn't realize that that was actually a bank robbery suspect. He was off duty, in his private car. But once he realized what was going on, he had a strong sense of recall."

"Some of our local police officers are also local residents," Gray said. "Right now it is a single suspect in a motor vehicle. A small silver sedan with New York plates. Our belief is that he's in the tri-state New York area and we wanted to make sure we branched out our coverage beyond the local Greenwich area."

"Linden came to us," Gray said, adding, "They said, 'Your bank robber looks like our bank robber,'" Gray said. "If you look at it you'll see that are a lot of similarities," adding that the New Jersey bank robbery was similar in stature, and also spoke Spanish.

"We've done our networking. The information has gone out and that is one of the reasons Linden reached back to us. Theirs came first. Ours happened. We networked out. They came to us."

On August 28 Patch reported on the Greenwich Police search for the bank robbery suspect. Greenwich Police released photos of the man they say robbed the People's United Bank and then ran towards the Greenwich Train Station just before 5:00 p.m Wednesday, Aug. 28.

During the Aug. 28 robbery, a Hispanic male, clad in a dress shirt, yellow tie, black pants, Fedora and sunglasses, came into People's United Bank and approached a female teller, and, according to Gray, "He proceeded to speak in Spanish to the teller. He demanded money and implied he had a weapon."
