Greenwich Police: August Officers of the Month

At great personal risk, Greenwich Police department's Technician Fox and Officer Dipietro stopped an out of control speed boat traveling at approximately 50 mph.

At about 8:00pm on July 19th, 2013 two occupants of a cigarette type speed boat were ejected from their craft after striking a large wave off of Stamford, CT at a reported speed of approximately 50 mph. The speed boat continued, unmanned and at high speeds, in an irregular course causing an imminent danger to all those on the water and along the shoreline, according to the Greenwich Police Dept.

Marine Law Enforcement Units from the region, including Greenwich, responded and made numerous attempts to stop the out of control boat. Failing to stop the boat, and with daylight failing, the decision to board the boat was made, according to Greenwich Police. Marine Technician Fox took the controls of Police Boat 139 and matched the course and speed of the out of control boat. Marine Officer Frank DiPietro then boarded the boat by jumping the gap between the two boats. Once aboard P/O DiPietro was able to bring the vessel under control.

At great personal risk, Technician Fox and Officer Dipietro successfully brought this incident to a conclusion. For their courage, dedication to duty, and display of extraordinary skill they are awarded the August 2013 Officer of the Month.
