Greenwich Police Ranks Grow by 5

The Greenwich Police Department moved closer to reaching its authorized strength of 155 officers with the swearing-in Monday of five new recruits.

Police Chief James Heavey told the recruits and their families gathered in the Greenwich Town Hall Meeting Room that he hopes the department will be at full strength by year's end.

The officers were administered the oath of office by First Selectman Peter Tesei who also is the town's police commissioner. "This is one of the most fulfilling duties in my capacity as First Selectman and Police Commissioner," Tesei told the quintet of men. "You are joining the ranks of a very prestigious organization of officers who serve with great honor and commitment."

The five will be attending the Milford Police Academy where classes begin Aug. 5, according to Sgt. Debora Vesciglio of Greenwich PD's training division. The officers won't complete that training until February. They will then return to Greenwich to complete departmental training and their 18-month probationary period.
