He Said, She Said, Cabbie Said, Said Police

An intoxicated man from Greenwich gets into a dispute with his girlfriend and the taxi driver who took him to her Darien home, police say.

Written by David Gurliacci.

Darien police report that officers, arriving outside a Maplewood Drive home just before midnight on Friday, could hear what sounded like possessions being smashed and thrown about inside.

Also outside the home were a man's girlfriend, who had refused to drive him home from a party in Westchester County, and a cab driver, who had not refused, according to police.

But the man inside the home -- his girlfriend's home -- had refused to pay the cab driver, police said they were told.

Darien police gave this further account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

The man, a 45-year-old resident of Shore Road in Greenwich, had become intoxicated at a party in Westchester County. So his girlfriend decided she didn't want to be around him and wouldn't drive him home.

Instead, the man took a taxi, which happened to be driven by a New Rochelle police officer performing his second job. (Police officers are allowed to work second jobs in many departments -- in the Darien Police Department, prior approval is needed.)

The boyfriend refused to pay the taxi driver, however, and when he arrived at his girlfriend's home, he began arguing with her, calling her names and at some point grabbing her. The taxi driver then intervened to keep the girlfriend safe until Darien police were summoned.

Among the items thrown, smashed or otherwise damaged: makeup items thrown on the floor, a wooden spindle broken on a stairwell, a desktop computer dismantled and thrown on the floor, walls damaged by doors being slammed.

As a police officer spoke with the girlfriend and the taxi driver outside, the boyfriend left the house. A police officer told the boyfriend to keep his hands up. The boyfriend didn't do so. He was forcibly restrained and handcuffed.

The boyfriend told police that his girlfriend was having a relationship with the taxi driver.

Police charged the boyfriend with disorderly conduct and initially held him on $5,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear Monday in state Superior Court in Stamford.
