Illegally Parked Car Leads to Greenwich Drug Bust

The driver of a car which Greenwich Police said was parked illegally in a handicapped parking space at a doughnut shop is facing drug-related charges.

Shortly before 5 p.m. March 6, an officer saw a car parked in a handicapped space at the Dunkin Donuts, 375 Post Rd., in Cos Cob, that did not have a handicapped parking permit. An investigation revealed the driver wasn't handicapped and didn't own a parking permit, according to a police report.

While interviewing the driver, identified as Christopher M. Lothrop, 30, of West Bridgewater, MA., the officer could "smell the very strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from with the vehicle." Lothrop denied having any marijuana. However, a police canine unit was brought to the scene and found pot in the car, according to the report.

Police also found a small portable scale and a pack of rolling papers in the car.

Lothrop was charged with possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and parking in a handicapped parking space without a permit. He was released after posting $200 bond and is scheduled to appear March 14 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
