Man Falls Overboard, Treads Water For an Hour Before Rescue

According to Greenwich Marine Police, the man was first spotted by two fishermen who saw him adrift in Long Island Sound, without a floatation device, near Goose Island, at the entrance to Cos Cob Harbor.

After treading water for about an hour, an exhausted boater who had accidentally fallen overboard from his 32-foot cabin cruiser while off the coast of Greenwich was rescued by officers with the Marine unit on Monday afternoon.

According to police, the man was first spotted by two fishermen who saw him adrift in Long Island Sound, without a floatation device, near Goose Island, at the entrance to Cos Cob Harbor.

The two fishermen, who had been anchored in a small vessel near shore, told police the man appeared exhausted and disoriented. They attempted to pull him out of the water, but he was so exhausted they couldn't lift him out, according to police.

Police said through an investigation they determined that the man had fallen overboard from his 32-foot Pursuit cabin cruiser, of which he was the sole occupant. The man reportedly attempted to regain control of the vessel, but was unable to do so, and became separated from it. He reportedly treaded water for over an hour before the fishermen spotted him.

Police said the man's vessel was located, grounded, along the shoreline of Goose Island. The vessel was reportedly towed to Beacon Point Marina.

The man's name, age and town of residence was not provided. He was reportedly transported to Stamford Hospital where he was treated for exhaustion and hypothermia.
