Mid-Afternoon Crash Leads to DWI Arrest

Greenwich Police say they found a bottle of vodka the driver allegedly hid behind a tree.

A driver who Greenwich Police say sideswiped a parked car is facing a driving while intoxicated charge.

The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. April 3 on Sherwood Place in central Greenwich, according to a police report.

The driver, identified as Michael J. Colvin, 55, of Shorefront Park, Norwalk, told police he was southbound on Sherwood when he struck the parked car. Police said Colvin appeared "slightly unsteady on his feet and his clothing disheveled,' according to the report.

A nearby construction worker approached police and told them that after the crash he saw the driver get out of his car and place a bottle of alcohol behind a tree — an accusation Colvin denied, according to the report.

However, police "located an almost full bottle of Smirnoff vodka behind a nearby tree," according to the report.

Colvin reportedly failed field sobriety tests. He also was cited for failure to signal. He was released after posting a $250 bond. He's scheduled to appear April 11 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
