Police Investigate Theft of Greenwich Church Collection

An arrest is expected in connection with theft reported over the weekend.

say they are investigating the theft of money from in Riverside that was reported May 20.

Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said investigators "hope to have (their investigation) wrapped up soon" and be able to arrest a suspect in connection with theft reported at 10:14 a.m., Sunday. "The parishioners were very observant and gave us some very good clues," Gray said.

The amount of money stolen from the church at 4 Riverside Ave., was not given.

According to a WCBS Channel 2 report, the thief apparently took the money after the 9 a.m. Mass May 20. Parishioners noticed a bag containing the collection money was missing from a safe in the church after the suspect told them he needed money.

Gray said he could not release further details. He said of the incident, "It is the only reported (church) theft in Greenwich."
