Greenwich PD: Round Hill Incident Was Reported Hostage Situation [Update]

Greenwich Police say someone called from an upper Round Hill Road home claimed to have a weapon "and several persons hostage."

Update: 9:10 a.m., April 18:
Greenwich Police on Friday said, "There is currently no reason to believe there is any threat to the community," following a reported hostage situation Thursday night on upper Round Hill Road.

According to Capt. Robert Berry, "On April 17, at about (7:59 p.m.) Greenwich Police dispatch received a phone call from a subject claiming to have a weapon and claiming to be holding several persons hostage at a Round Hill Road residence."

Berry said, "Greenwich Police responded to the residence, set up perimeter and attempted to make contact with anyone inside the house. No one responded from inside the house and no one answered the phone from which the initial call was made.

"Greenwich Police eventually made contact with some family members not currently at the residence but some household members could not be located. Officers eventually made entry into the house and no one was found inside," Berry said.

While officers continued their efforts to contact anyone inside the house, Round Hill Road between Edgar Road and Lake Avenue was closed to traffic.

In his statement, Berry said, "At this time we do not believe any actual hostage situation and the Greenwich Police are continuing to investigate the matter. There have been no reported injuries from the incident and there is currently no reason to believe there is any threat to the community."

Update: 12:05 a.m., April 18
Greenwich Police now report: "Round Hill Road is open. Officers are clearing the scene of the investigation. The case remains open while more facts are gathered no arrest."

Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said he expects to have more information on the situation later today, Friday, April 18.

A "serious criminal matter" has prompted Greenwich Police to shut down upper Round Hill Road in Greenwich's backcountry late Thursday evening.

Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said that "upper Round Hill Road in the 600 block" has been blocked off to traffic because of "a serious criminal matter. Currently, there is no immediate danger to the public."

According to 911 dispatch radio transmissions, Round Hill Road is shut between Edgar Road and Lake Avenue.

Gray said he "would not confirm or deny anything" regarding initial radio reports that a person armed with weapons may have been holding hostages.

Patch will have updates as they become available.
