Greenwich Police: Theft Victim Extorted for Return of Wallet

A Greenwich man is accused of trying to extort money for the return of a wallet reported stolen from a woman as she shopped at a local supermarket.

According to a Greenwich Police report, Nicholas A. Scarfone, 30, of Livingstone Place, Greenwich, was arrested Nov. 27 on charges of first-degree larceny by extortion and sixth-degree larceny in connection with the incident.

The victim told police that her wallet had been stolen while she shopped at a supermarket in town. The victim was contacted by a "subject who demanded money in return of her wallet/personal effects." A meeting place was agreed upon and "the accused was taken into custody after trying to extort $40 from the victim in order to receive her personal property back."

The supermarket where the theft occurred was not identified in the police report.

Scarfone was released after posting $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Dec. 4 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
