Residents Embrace Greenwich Police Day

The Greenwich Police Department hosted its third annual Police Day for local families.

What's not to like?

Motorcycles. A bouncy castle for kids. Tricked out police vehicles for special divisions such as Forensics and the Special Response Unit. Hot dogs. An ATV. A friendly German shepherd named Tyro.

Droves of Greenwich residents brought their children to visit the Greenwich Police Department Saturday for the third annual Police Day. The program is designed to give residents and children an opportunity to get an fun and informative up-close and personal look at what the men and women in blue do.

Sgt. John Slusarz helped several tykes onto the department's Harley Davidson motorcycles. Members of the Special Response Unit, which most departments call the SWAT team, helped residents try on their 60-plus pound equipment that's worn when they're called out.

Deputy Chief Mark Marino said the department's ATV unit has been used many times during recent weather catastrophes, allowing officers to access areas where trees, utility wires or snow drifts would preclude access by patrol cars. In good weather, the ATV is used to patrol Greenwich beaches to provide a quicker response, according to Marino.

Residents also were able to tour the Public Safety Complex.
