Riversville Road Closed Through Morning Rush Hour [UPDATE]

Greenwich Police say car crash took down utility pole.

Updated 5:00 p.m.

Greenwich Police say the driver of the vehicle which crashed into a utility pole, snapping it is being treated at an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Greenwich Police and Fire departments were notified of the crash just after 11:30 p.m. Aug. 28 by the North Castle (NY) Police Department, according to Sgt. John Slusarz of the Greenwich Police Traffic Section. The crash occurred near the New York state border near 741 Riversville Rd. in Greenwich.

Slusarz said the pole held electrical, telephone and television cables and when it fell, live electrical wires and a transformer were strewn about the scene, shutting down the major north-south artery in the northwest section of town. After crews from Connecticut Light & Power installed a new pole and transformer, other utilities were then able to reinstall their equipment. The road was shut to traffic between John Street and Bedford Road for nearly 10 hours, reopening about 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Because the accident report has not been completed, information about the driver, vehicle and whether charges will be filed was not available, Slusarz said.

Original story:

Commuters will have to alter their routes if they use Riversville Road for their Wednesday morning drives.

According to Lt. Kraig Gray, the major north-south artery has been closed since early Wednesday when a utility pole was knocked down during a car crash. No one was injured, however, the road had to be closed.

"It's impossible for anybody to get passed. CL&P emergency crews are out there trying to work on repairs," Gray said in a statement. "It will more than likely be open after the morning rush hour." Gray said he was not aware of any power outages caused by the downed pole.

According to the CL&P website, 1 customer in Greenwich is without power at 6:45 a.m. and it's not immediately known whether that outage is related to the Riversville Road incident. Police did not say what time the crash occurred.

Patch will post updates as information becomes available.
