Sgt. Reynolds to Retire from Greenwich Police Force

Chief of Police James Heavey announced the retirement of Sergeant Michael Reynolds, who has completed 27 years of service with the Greenwich Police Department.

Sergeant Reynolds was born and raised in Greenwich and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1982. Sgt. Michael Reynolds is a second generation Greenwich Police Office as his father, Captain Howard Reynolds, was also a member of the department. His brother, Detective Kent Reynolds is still serving the department.

On August 25, 1986 he was sworn in as a Greenwich Police Officer and graduated from the 198th Class of the ConnecticutMunicipal Police Basic Police Academy. Sergeant Reynolds assignments included Patrol Officer, Accident Investigator (1993), Detective (1997), Detective Sergeant (2000), and finally as Section Sergeant of Community Impact Officers (2006)

Sergeant Reynolds has received numerous departmental commendations for excellent police work and actions exemplifying the best traditions of police service. He has received Chief Commendations for investigations and apprehensions in a wide array of situations, including; larceny investigations, the capture of escaped convicts, the arrest of Connecticut’s #1 “Deadbeat Dad”, and when he helped deliver a baby.

In 2006 Sergeant Reynolds would be reassigned to oversee the Community Impact Section. During this time he continued to distinguish himself through successful investigative and lifesaving efforts. He was recognized as the Officer of the Month in 2006 when, off-duty and on vacation with his family, he leaped into action saving an elderly man from drowning in Nantucket Sound. His section’s successes resulted in the section being honored as the John Clark Award recipients for 2008. A principle component of that success stems from Sergeant Reynolds running of the Greenwich Police departments Citizens Police Academy (CPA). Sergeant Reynolds was the academy’s “Commandant” from 2008-2013 and was instrumental to it broad appeal and success in the community. 

In discussing his retirement Sergeant Reynolds noted that one of his proudest moments at GPD was when he participated in the birth of the baby. He also felt that his role as a police officer was always about service to the community. His involvement with the CPA was a way for him to connect with the wonderful people of the town that he grew up in.

Upon his retirement Sgt. Reynolds will continue to serve the Town as a Special Police Officer and was sworn in on Thursday, September 5, 2013.
