Greenwich Silver Shield Association Issues Warning on Phone Solicitors

The Greenwich Silver Shield Association, the Greenwich Police Department's union, has issued an alert regarding telephone solicitors who claim they are collecting donations for the department.

According to retired Lt. Tom Keegan, who handles fund-raising for the Silver Shield, "The Silver Shield Association does not contact any of our residents by telephone. We do our annual appeal by mail only."

Keegan said the donation campaign is mailed to residents each fall, between September and December.

"I have been getting complaints from residents that these organizations are aggressively soliciting donations...people ask if they support Greenwich Police and they say, 'Oh yes we support the GPD,' " Keegan said. "These people are perfectly legit but they're doing it strictly for a monetary gain, whereas all I do is raise money for the Silver Shield because that is where my heart is."

"We never call people" Keegan added. And those donations you make by phone, aren't given to the Silver Shield, Keegan said.

Keegan said that if anyone has questions regarding the association's fund-raising efforts, they may call him at 203-869-9519.
