Teen Charged with Shooting at Grandmother and Year-old Girl

Suspect was under house arrest; victims not injured.

A woman walking her granddaughter in a stroller along Havemeyer Place escaped injury Monday afternoon when shots were fired at the pair.

According to Greenwich Police, a neighborhood 17-year-old, under house arrest, now faces weapons-related charges in connection with the incident that involved firing three shots that hit the stroller. Neither the 57-year-old grandmother nor her year-old granddaughter were injured, according to Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray.

In a copy of the police report, the “accused was adamant that he had not shot directly at anyone and had not had any intention of hurting anyone, especially an infant child.” The suspect also told police that he did not have any weapons in his home, according to the report.

The suspect was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, risk of injury to a minor and 2nd-degree reckless endangerment.

According to the report, the suspect told police that he was shooting at a can outside the home. Police later seized four air rifles; an air-powered pistol, and a paintball gun from the suspect’s grandmother’s car including a .22-caliber air rifle believed to have been used in the incident and a French’s fried onion can which the suspect admitted shooting.

“The accused initially denied having any weapons of any type. … that he was under house arrest on an ankle bracelet and he has been  ‘clean’  while on probation.,” according to the report.

Gray said the suspect has a varied criminal background. “This juvenile has charges of assault, threatening, another weapons charge, vandalism … he has a long history and was under house arrest for failure to comply with previous conditions that were subject to his release.”

The suspect was released after $2,500 bond and scheduled to appear June 8 in the Juvenile Matters Division of state Superior Court in Stamford.
