Teen Steals Trucks, Crashes into Parked Car

The 17-year-old suspect is accused of breaking into a garage to steal the vehicle.

A 17-year-old Greenwich boy faces numerous charges stemming from the burglary of a Lower Cross Road garage where he stole a pickup truck he took on a joyride, according to Greenwich Police.

The April 10 incident may have gone undetected had he not crashed into a car parked in a fire lane on Lafayette Place, narrowly missing a mother who was retrieving her toddler from the rear seat of the car, according to police. The teen fled the accident scene.

According to police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray, the mother and the toddler escaped injury when the pickup struck the open rear door of the car as she was getting the baby out of the vehicle shortly before 3 p.m. April 10 in front of 52 Lafayette Pl. Uninjured, she was able to get the license plate of the truck and called police.

Police went to the Lower Cross Road home of the truck's owner and found the teen in the area, Gray said. According to a police report, the teen admitted to breaking into the garage and stealing the truck so he could drive to downtown Greenwich to meet friends. The teen also admitted he know the owners were away.

The teen, who is not being identified because of his age, was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree larceny, second-degree criminal trover, evading responsibility, operating without a license and interfering with an officer. The interfering charge stems from the teen allegedly giving officers a false name.

He was released and scheduled to appear April 23 in the Juvenile Matters Division of state Superior Court in Stamford.

The woman was given a verbal warning for parking illegally in the fire lane, Gray said.
