Update: 4:50 p.m., Jan. 10.

Replacement of an eight-inch cast iron water main which broke and caused the road to buckle at the intersection of North Maple Avenue and Pheasant Lane late Friday morning, should be repaired and back in operation by 10 p.m. Friday.

According to Aquarion spokesman Peter Fazekas, the 48 customers in the area  should have water service restored between 8 and 10 p.m. Jan. 10.

The break was reported about 11:20 a.m.

Fazekas said repairs took longer than expected because the main was seven feet below the road surface. “Besides the pavement, crews had to go through concrete — it was seven-feet deep,” Fazekas explained.

Late Friday afternoon, the utility was notifying residents about the status of the repairs by using the reverse  911 system, Fazekas said.

The horizontal crack in the pipe  “is obviously weather-related,” Fazekas added. He advised residents that once service is restored to run cold water taps until the water is clear.

The road is closed at Lake Avenue and Husted Lane, according to Peter Klingel, the Greenwich Department of Public Works highway inspector on the scene.

According to Chuck Melillo, if the Aquarion Water Co. Utility operations division at the scene, a repair crew is enroute to the scene of the break at the intersection of North Maple and Pheasant Lane.

Water service has been shut off to homes on North Maple, Pheasant and Bobolink Drive. It is not immediately known how many customers are affected by the break of the 8-inch main.

Melillo said what caused the break or the extent of the repairs or how long they will take, won't be known until the is excavated.
